What the role actually looks like
- CAMHS inpatient wards
- Residential mental health services for young people
- Community mental health support services
- Crisis and step-down services
- Supported living and community outreach
Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Providing practical, emotional, and social support to service users in line with their individual care plans
- Building therapeutic and trusting relationships with service users, promoting independence and wellbeing
- Supporting service users with daily living activities including personal care, meal preparation, and community access
- Assisting with the implementation of positive behaviour support (PBS) strategies
- Monitoring and recording changes in service users’ presentation, behaviour, and mental health, and escalating concerns appropriately
- Working collaboratively with the wider care team including nurses, therapists, and social workers
- Attending handovers, team meetings, and supervision sessions
- Maintaining accurate, up-to-date care records and documentation
- Supporting the delivery of structured activities and engagement programmes
What we need from you —
Essential:
- Previous experience working in a mental health, social care, or support worker role (paid or voluntary)
- A genuine commitment to person-centred, compassionate care
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain)
- Up-to-date mandatory training — BLS, safeguarding, manual handling (or willingness to complete)
- Strong communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills
- The ability to work flexibly including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays as required
- A reliable, resilient, and team-focused approach
Desirable (but not always required):
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent)
- Experience specifically within CAMHS or young people’s mental health services
- PMVA or de-escalation training
- PBS (Positive Behaviour Support) training or awareness
- Experience supporting individuals with complex needs, ASD, or ADHD
