What the role actually looks like
- CAMHS inpatient and community services
- Adult mental health inpatient and community teams
- Forensic and specialist psychiatric services
- Crisis and liaison psychiatry services
- Independent and NHS settings nationwide
Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Providing senior clinical leadership and overall medical responsibility for a defined caseload of patients
- Conducting and overseeing comprehensive psychiatric assessments including risk assessment and formulation
- Leading and contributing to MDT meetings, ward rounds, and care programme approach (CPA) reviews
- Making and communicating diagnostic decisions and developing treatment plans in collaboration with patients and families
- Prescribing and reviewing medication in line with NICE guidelines and evidence-based practice
- Providing clinical supervision and leadership to junior medical staff, trainees, and the wider MDT
- Ensuring compliance with the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and other relevant legislation
- Maintaining accurate, timely clinical documentation to GMC and Trust standards
- Contributing to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
- Liaising with commissioners, legal teams, and external agencies as required
What we need from you —
Essential:
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise — no conditions or restrictions
- Approved Clinician (AC) status and Section 12(2) approval (or willingness to obtain)
- Demonstrable experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist or in a senior psychiatric role
- Strong clinical leadership and MDT working skills
Desirable (but not always required):
- Additional sub-specialty experience (e.g. CAMHS, forensic, liaison, ADHD, eating disorders)
- Experience in NHS and independent sector settings
- Leadership or management experience at service or departmental level
- Training approval or experience in supervising medical trainees
